Histories

by Herodotus

Histories by Herodotus is a nonfiction first published in 430 BC/BCE. The History of Herodotus , Volume 1 is a work written in the 5th century BC. Considered the founding work of history in Western literature, it chronicles the rise of the Persian Empire and the causes of the Greco-Persian Wars. Herodotus frames the conflict as a battle between slavery and freedom, weaving together accounts of rulers, oracles, conquest, and cultural customs. Through travels and interviews across the ancient world, he preserves the remarkable achievements of both Greeks and non-Greeks before time erases them. Themes of Greece -- History -- To 146 B.C. and History, Ancient give the work a clear emotional and intellectual center. Herodotus relies on a direct explanatory style shaped by observation, argument, and evidence, allowing mood and structure to carry as much meaning as subject matter. At roughly 288,127 words with a difficult reading profile, it offers a reading commitment that is easy to judge before beginning while still leaving room for close attention. Its continuing value lies in its usefulness as a window into the concerns and assumptions of its time. It remains worth reading for the precision with which it turns Greece -- History -- To 146 B.C. and History, Ancient into a sustained literary experience.
